Title: FLOODS IN MEDIUM WATERSHEDS OF MOUNTAIN REGIONS

Author: E. Beilicci, R. Beilicci

Year: 2009

Publisher: European Water Resources Association (EWRA)

Description:

The paper analyses the characteristics of floods occurred in medium watersheds of the mountain regions: causes, effects and structural/non-structural measures aimed at reducing the floods negative effects. Floods represent the most frequent disaster, which can occur on different scales – from large rivers to small rivers – affecting the state of the environment, including here economic damage, ecological lack of balance and human casualties. Current statistics show an increase in the number of natural disasters (especially storms and floods) occurred in 2007, which was not, in fact, a different year from this point of view. Romania is one of the most exposed countries to natural disasters, especially to floods, which have lately caused significant damage. Thus, only in 2005, floods caused damage of over 1.5 billion EUROS. The paper also presents a case study – the flood occurred in March 2007 in Iza river watershed, located in the North of Romania, in the mountain region.
