Title: CLIMATE CHANGE AND WATER FOR AGRICULTURE: IMPACTS – MITIGATION – ADAPTATION

Author: N.R. Dalezios, Z. Gagkas, C. Domenikiotis, E. Kanellou and A. Blanta

Year: 2009

Publisher: European Water Resources Association (EWRA)

Description:

The aim of this paper is to briefly present the main effects of climate change and variability on water resources with respect to water availability for agriculture in the Mediterranean region. The projected increase of temperature
and decrease of precipitation, combined with the more frequent occurrence of extreme events, such as drought, will have a great impact on agricultural production and the economies of the Mediterranean region. Results of undertaken studies in Greece, in precipitation patterns and drought assessment are presented. Based on a precipitation frequency analysis, evidence of precipitation reductions is shown. Calculated values of a drought index, namely the Reconnaissance Drought Index (RDI), for drought assessment in Thessaly are delineated. The importance of the formulation of adaptation strategies is highlighted and an adaptation scheme for agriculture in water scarce areas is presented.
