Title: CONSTRUCTION OF ISOERODENT CURVES FOR A TRANSBOUNDARY BASIN

The study area is the area between Guadiana River, flowing through the southeastern part of Portugal, and the Portugal – Spain border. In the framework of a research project concerning the drought study in the transboundary basin mentioned above, the soil erosion due to rainfall was also computed for the basin. The computational results of soil erosion over the basin are represented by a map of isoerodent curves. The basin area is about 2853 km2. The pilot basin was divided into 136 sub-basins by means of a quadrangular grid (5 km x 5 km). For the computation of soil erosion, the classical “Universal Soil Loss Equation” (USLE) was used. Monthly rainfall data of 14 meteorological stations located in Portugal were available. The longest time period, for which rainfall data are available, is 74 years, while the shortest one is 25 years. Apart from that, a contours map was constructed. For the construction of the isoerodent curves, the software “SURFER 8” was used. The computed mean annual soil erosion amount per unit area in the above basin is lower than the corresponding measured amount in basins located
in Cyprus.
