Author: R. Hălbac-Cotoară-Zamfir and A. Costescu

Year: 2009

Publisher: European Water Resources Association (EWRA)

Description:

The lack of interest for a clean environment (especially clean waters) from the period before 1990 (and unfortunately even after 1990) had as consequence a low quality for surface and underground water bodies from western part of Romania. Large cities as Timișoara, Arad, Reșița are still representing main polluters even it were adopted friendly environment measures. Other important sources of pollution were represented by large pig farms which were in majority closed during the last years. Unfortunately we can still observe the adverse effects of these farms at surface and in underground. Generally, the agriculture was one of the main polluters in Romania’s western part. The legislation adopted in the last years according to the European principles created the necessary framework for an improved situation regarding the water sources and bodies. The paper will present maps and records which are showing a progress, from low quality situations to an improved present. This paper will focus on the water pollution sources in western part of Romania, presenting the causes and the consequences of the pollution phenomenon, the main subject being Bega hydrographical basin. A chapter of this paper will discuss the legislative framework regarding water protection also referring to Romanian researches in
these domains and from the mentioned area.
