Author: Μ. Gratziou, Μ. Ηalatsi, K. Skordas

Year: 2009

Publisher: European Water Resources Association (EWRA)

Description:

This paper examines three waste stabilization pond located in Vamvakofito, Skopos and Charopos, in the Prefecture of Serres. The parameters, data and assumptions produced during the systems’ design are presented along with the validity of these assumptions and the modifications taking place during the construction and operation of the systems. Design assumptions are compared to real time data, while the systems’ efficiency is evaluated. The systems were monitored for a year, and their results were checked. Following a yearlong
sample collection, on a biweekly basis, at the systems’ inflow and outflow and after a series of chemical, biological and microbiological analyses, the systems’ efficiency for the removal of E.coli , T. coliforms, SS, BOD5, COD, N-total, Ptotal, inorganic elements and heavy metals is estimated. Temperature and weather conditions were also recorded. Therefore, seasonal variations are highlighted. The effluents suitability for irrigation purposes is examined, locating the systems’ weaknesses. The assessment of the ponds’ operation and their behaviour not only provides information for these specific systems but also offers guidelines for the design and construction of similar systems at the region in the future by taking into account the local conditions.
