Description:

This study was conduced within the framework of the SMART-project on “Sustainable Management of Available Water Resources with Innovative Technologies” in the Lower Jordan Rift Valley. Its key objective is to select regions
that offer the highest potential for the future implementation of system solutions for decentralized wastewater treatment and reuse. Site identification was accomplished by applying a “filtration process” for the rural, suburban and tourism sector. The filtration included the following criteria and parameters:

  • General potential and future demand for decentralized wastewater treatment and reuse solutions
  • Connection degree to existing sewer systems and future development plans
  • Population density and groundwater vulnerability in the investigation area
  • Recommendations of local stakeholders, key professionals and high-level officials
