Title: APPLICATION OF SUSTAINABLE ENGINEERING FOR URBAN AREAS: EXAMINING EFFECTIVENESS OF WATER CONSUMPTION IN URBAN REGENERATION

As urbanization is being a global issue, the conventional engineering methods for infrastructures have shown their limits in the view of sustainability. To overcome these limits, studies as sustainable engineering is introduced to achieve sustainability in urban areas. Among the methodologies applied for sustainable engineering, this study considers that material flow analysis (MFA) will be a useful method. Participating in the national urban regeneration project in Korea, this study purposes to examine the effectiveness of water consumption for the green infrastructure system which is proposed by the urban regeneration project in urban areas. By comparing scenarios, about 80% of more water consumption is expected for urban regeneration and by applying the green infrastructure system about 3~4% of water consumption is expected. Also by examining the water effectiveness considering water consumption and the benefits that are provided, it is concluded that urban regeneration applying the green infrastructure system will largely contribute in achieving urban sustainability.
