Dr. D. Fatta-Kassinos

Dr. Despo Fatta-Kassinosis an Associate Professor of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and the Director of Nireas International Water Research Center (Nireas-IWRC) at the University of Cyprus (UCY). She holds a Diploma in Chemical Engineering from National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), an M.Sc. in Environmental Management and Education from the European Association of Environmental Management and Education and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from NTUA. Since 2011, she directs and coordinates all the scientific and administrative activities of Nireas-IWRC, which is one of the Research Units of the University, and is very active in the research area of water and wastewater treatment, management and reuse.

Currently, her group is participating in 8 EU-funded research projects (H2020, PRIMA, Water JPI, ERANETMED), while she has participated in more than 70 research projects. She is the Coordinator of the ANSWER project "Antibiotics and mobile resistance elements in wastewater reuse applications: risks and innovative solutions" (H2020-MSCA-ITN-2015/675530) (2015-2019), and she was the Chair of the COST Action NEREUS ES1403 "New and emerging challenges and opportunities in wastewater reuse" (2014-2018). She is the Chair of the Advisory Board of the African Center of Excellence in Water and Environment Research, the leader of the WG5 'Wastewater reuse' of NORMAN Association and a founding member of the International Ph.D. School on Advanced Oxidation Processes and member of its Scientific and Management Committee. She is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the project "Cross-Research in Environmental Technologies of the University of Santiago de Compostela (CRETUS)"of the Universitate de Santiago de Compostela, Spain. She serves on numerous scientific evaluation panels (e.g. National Research Funding Agencies from Europe, Middle East, Asia, Canada, USA, the European Science Foundation and the European Commission). She has also served as the Chair of the Scientific and Technological Advisory Board of the European JPI 'Water Challenges for a Changing World' (2015-2019).

Assoc. Prof. Fatta-Kassinos is the Editor of the Journal Environmental Chemical Engineering, Elsevier. She has over 144 peer-reviewed scientific publications in SCI journals, 170 conference papers, various chapters in book series and she has co-edited one book on the “Xenobiotics in the Urban Water Cycle” by Springer (which is one of the very first and most popular books in the field), while two others books entitled “Wastewater Reuse and Current Challenges” and “Advanced Treatment Technologies for Urban Wastewater Reuse” in “The Handbook of Environmental Chemistry Series” have been published by Springer.

In 2012, she received Nikos Symeonides 2011 National Research Award by the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation, for her work on wastewater treatment and xenobiotics (highest national research recognition). In 2017, she received an honorary award for her long-standing contribution and activity in the research area of Environmental Protection by the Hellenic Open University. Dr. Fatta-Kassinos is a Highly Cited Researcher 2018, in recognition of the production of multiple highly cited papers that rank in the top 1% by citations for field and year in Cross-field, awarded by Web of Science, Clarivate Analytics.

Her research expertise includes water and wastewater treatment and reuse; contaminants of emerging concern; advanced chemical oxidation processes; advanced biological treatment; advanced chromatographic analysis for the identification of microcontaminants in environmental matrices; assessment of the biological potency of microcontaminants and wastewater flows through the application of bioassays; antibiotic resistance in the aquatic environment; uptake of microcontaminants by crops during wastewater reuse.

Dr. S. Christodoulou, Member, Board of Directors

Dr. S. Christodoulou holds a PhD in Civil Engineering from Columbia University (New York City, 1998). Upon completion of his PhD, and after several years of industry experience in the field of construction management, he joined Polytechnic University (Brooklyn, New York) as an Assistant Professor and Head of the Construction Management Program of the university (1998 - 2003). In 2004 he joined the University of Cyprus, having also worked for a year in Cyprus (construction industry) and in Greece (Democritus University of Thrace) as an Adjunct Professor. Dr. Christodoulou is the author of several scientific publications, the recipient of significant research funding (including a prestigious award from the National Science Foundation, NSF) and the recipient of an international research award (London, 1999). He is currently Cyprus's national representative on ESF/COST Transportation and Urban Development Committee. He was the organizer and chair of the European Water Resources Association (EWRA) 2009 conference held in Cyprus, an Associate Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), a reviewer for several of scientific journals and a member of Polytechnic’s Center for Construction Management Technology.

Dr. P. Papanastasiou is Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Dean of the Engineering School at the University of Cyprus. In 2002 he accepted a position as associate professor at the University of Cyprus with a main objective to establish and organize the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in which he served as Head until December 2008. Prior to that appointment he was Research Scientist, Senior Research Scientist and Principal Research Scientist at Schlumberger Cambridge Research in U.K, from 1991 to 2002. He received his first degree from NTU of Athens (1984) and M.Sc (1986) and Ph.D (1990) degrees from the University of Minnesota all in Civil Engineering. His research interests and scientific contribution is in the area of applied and computational mechanics with applications in geomechanics, petroleum geomechanics and environmental geomechanics. He has published 43  refereed journal papers,  51 papers in refereed conference proceedings, 3 book chapters and has edited 5 books. He holds 3 U.K. and USA patents and wrote more than 40 industrial reports. He is editorial advisor in the International Journal of Geomechanics, in the International Journal of Hydrological Research (new journal) and he serves as reviewer for EPSRC (UK), ESF (Europe), RGC (Hong Kong) and for 16 International Journals. He has been involved in the organization of 9 conferences on Computational Methods in Geomechanics, three of which he served as chairman.

Dr. Yiannis Dialynas, Member, Board of Directors

Dr. Yannis Dialynas holds a Ph.D. in Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering from the Dep. of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology (2017; advisor: Provost Rafael Bras), a M.Sc. in Civil Engineering from Georgia Tech (2013), and a Diploma in Civil Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (2011). Prior to becoming a faculty member at UCY, he served as a Postdoctoral Scholar at Georgia Tech and at the Dep. of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of California, Irvine.

 

His research and professional service focus on scientifically and socially significant problems including natural hazards, global change, and water resources sustainability. In 2016 NASA awarded him with the NASA Earth & Space Science Fellowship for his interdisciplinary research about the influence of hydrologic processes on the Carbon Cycle. He is a Member of the of the American Geophysical Union’s Ecohydrology Technical Committee, and a co-author in the U.S. Global Change Research Program’s 2nd State of the Carbon Cycle Report (SOCCR2, 2018), a U.S. governmental assessment of Climate Change impacts on North America’s Carbon Cycle which contributes to North America’s 4th National Climate Assessment (NCA4).

Prof. S. C. Kassinos (Associate Professor) has been a faculty in the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at the University of Cyprus since 2003. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Texas at Austin (B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering, 1986) while on a CASP/USIA scholarship. He then moved to the Mechanical Engineering Department at Stanford University in California, where he received his M.Sc. in 1989 and his Ph.D. in 1995. He continued to work in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Stanford University as a Postdoctoral Fellow till 1997, when he joined the Research Staff at the Stanford/NASA-Ames Center for Turbulence Research (CTR). Between 1999 and 2003 he also held a joint appointment at the DOE Center for Integrated Turbulence Simulations (CITS) at Stanford University. He joined the University of Cyprus in 2003 as an Assistant Professor, where he is currently an Associate Professor and Associate Dean of Engineering. He is the Head of two Research Laboratories: the Computational Sciences Laboratory at the University of Cyprus (UCY-CompSci) and the Fusion Transnational Unit for Research in Cyprus (FUTURE-CY) and leads a team of 5 post-doctoral fellows, 3 PhD students and 1 M.Sc. Student.  He has been the coordinator of the Marie Curie TOK Action “Transfer of knowledge for the creation of a multidisciplinary core of excellence in the computational sciences at the University of Cyprus (UCY)”, which in its four years of implementation has resulted in more than 30  peer reviewed international journal publications and has attracted a considerable number of international researchers to Cyprus.  His research interests center on the numerical simulation and modeling of complex physical systems including fluid flow in connection with environmental, biomedical and technological applications. He teaches in the area of thermofluids and computational engineering. He has published over 40 papers in international peer-reviewed journals and has over 270 citations. Since joining the University of Cyprus, he has coordinated or participated as a partner in several research projects, receiving a total funding of over 2 million € for his research activities.

Dr. Costas Michael, Member, Board of Directors

Dr. Costas Michael graduated in chemistry (1969) and got his PhD in chemistry (1974) from the Athens University, Greece. He has been Lecturer and then Assistant Professor at the department of Biological Chemistry, School of Medicine, Athens University (1970-1978). He worked for 29 years at the multidisciplinary State General Laboratory in Cyprus from which he left as its Director. He has long experience in the separation, identification and quantitation of organics and inorganics at trace levels, particularly in the domain of the environment, with state-of-art instrumentation. He is now a scientific associate at GAIA Lab. As a special scientist he is teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Cyprus.

His research interests fall within the area of environmental measurements and assessment with focus on the wastewater quality and treatment and the removal of xenobiotics from waters and wastewaters through advanced oxidation processes. He published over 30 papers in peer review journals and in proceedings of national and international refereed conferences. He has participated in many National and EU funded projects.
